Wels

There are thousands of catfish species world-wide. Only one species swims in the Ahrenhorster Edelfisch tanks:

the European Wels, also known as the Waller. It is the largest fish in Europe that lives outs its entire life-cycle in fresh water.

The characteristics include the six barbs on the head: two on the upper jaw and four on the lower jaw. Depending on where it lives, the wels grows to 1 to 1.5 metres in length weighing 10 – 50 kg.

The wels is particularly well suited to indoor fish-farming because of its tasty and nutritious filets.
